about
Most of the songs on this recording are originals. Which is to say, originally by me. This one was percolating literally for years while I waited for the lyric to come out. Perhaps it's easy to see why. The idea finally started to come together when I started work on my new musical, Stop Talking...so it may yet find a life on the stage.
The chord structure is borrowed in part from music that I wrote for a off-broadway play called "Almost, Maine" by the brilliant John Cariani. The entire musical program for that play was based on different treatments of 4 basic chords -- and the fact that they didn't resolve until the very last moment of the whole play. Say what you will, but the residuals from that music have kept me afloat during some very hard times.
The melody on the chorus was, if remember correctly, inspired by one tiny lick played during the Alex Gifford's guitar part on "Tonight's the Kind of Night" on Kiki & Herb's Christmas CD, Do You Hear What We Hear, a recording I am super proud to have produced -- and a single copy of which I wish I could find.
lyrics
I don't know but I have found
There are some people who can disappear without a sound.
And maybe that was true for him.
He's not the man he might have been.
And if that's what you're thinking of,
There's no doubt you had it rough.
But that was then and this is now
And I think I can show you how
It sounds when someone stays.
And you never have to say
"Baby, here's to you
And everything you do.
I really hate to see you go.
But when they ask me why,
I'll say you said goodbye.
That is all they'll need to know."
I don't know but I've been told
Dying young is preferable to growing old.
And maybe sometimes that is true.
Maybe it's even true for you.
But if that's what you're thinking of
You should know it won't be enough.
No, I've been round that bend before
So you will have to show me more.
Why not give it a try?
We could all use a good cry.
Baby, here's to you
And everything you do.
I really hate to see you go.
But when they ask me why,
I'll say you said goodbye.
That is all they'll need to know.
I don't know but I have learned
Some folks will play with matches even after they've been burned.
And maybe that is true for me.
But I don't want to wait and see.
So if that's what you're counting on,
You should know that I'll be gone.
'Cause there's one thing I know is true,
It's that it's over when it's through.
Think I just heard my cue.
All together, one and two and...
Baby, here's to you
And everything you do.
I really hate to see you go.
But when they ask me why,
I'll say you said goodbye.
That is all they'll need to know.
